Unique Animals of Brevard Zoo Seen Through the Bold Lens of the Camera

Unique Animals of Brevard Zoo Seen Through the Bold Lens of the Camera

Photos by Nate Beck -

Brevard Zoo is one of the most innovative zoos in the United States.

  • It's the only zoo in America that offers a guided kayak tour on which you'll likely see Giraffe, Ostrich, Impala,
Ring-tailed lemur, Grevy's zebra, Marabou stork, Klipspringer and White rhino.
  • There's a zipline adjacent to the zoo that allows visitors to zipline OVER the animals.
  • Enclosed pathways overhead link the various primate enclosures allowing visitors to be surrounded by the
     animals at all times.
  • Visitors can walk among kangaroos, wallabies and emu rather than watching them behind a railing.
    (No touching or petting allowed.)
  • Feed a giraffe from the giraffe platform. You'll be face-to-face with the world’s tallest animal as they take
a treat from you with their 18" long tongue!

WILD FLORIDA

Though they are located in the Wild Florida section of Brevard Zoo, they are actually Chilean Flamingos.

The bald eagle was once in danger of becoming extinct. In 1963 there were only 487 nesting pairs in the wild.                        Today, there are more than 9,700 nesting pairs.

The two American Crocodiles have been at the Brevard Zoo since it opened in 1994.

The alligator became the official state reptile of Florida in 1987.

RAINFOREST REVEALED

The Jaguar is the largest cat species in the Americas.

Zoo employees never go into the Jaguar enclosure. Even cats raised in captivity are still very dangerous animals.       When we were there we watched this cat destroy a stuffed toy in a matter of seconds.

The best time to see the animals at Brevard Zoo is early in the day. They all typically like to nap in the afternoon.

LANDS OF CHANGE

The Komodo Dragon has shark-like teeth and its poisonous venom can kill you within hours of being bitten.             Better to observe them from afar!

Only the adult male of the Babirussa (also called a "Deer Pig") has these distinctive tusks.

Swamp wallabies have two uteruses, so they can conceive a new baby before birthing another, scientists have discovered.

You can walk freely among the kangaroos and wallabees at the Brevard Zoo. (Petting or touching is not allowed.)

EXPEDITION AFRICA

Meerkats live in underground tunnels with 20-50 of their extended family.

The Southern White Rhinoceros needs to eat every day but can go 4-5 days without water.

Currently extinct in the wild, Scimitar-horned oryx is a graceful antelope that is                                              reportedly the foundation of the legend of the unicorn.

The cheetah is one of the fastest mammals and can go from 0 -  60 miles an hour in three seconds,

The Grévy’s zebra is the largest of the three zebra species. Just like no two people have the same fingerprint,              no two zebras have the same stripe pattern.

Get face to face with the giraffes on the giraffe platform at Brevard Zoo.

Giraffe are the tallest animal in the world.

The giraffe's 18-inch tongue moves quickly; especially when getting treats from visitors at the Brevard Zoo.

With more than 900 animals at the Brevard Zoo, we only captured a few of them through the camera lens.
